O Victor Jara (23/9/1932 - 16/9/1973) άσκησε σημαντική επιρροή στη μουσική και την κουλτούρα της Χιλής. Αποτέλεσε κινητήρια δύναμη της Nueva Canción, μουσικό κίνημα της Λατινικής Αμερικής. Το κίνημα αυτό έχει ασχοληθεί με τα επαναστατικά κινήματα στη Λατινική Αμερική. Μετά το στρατιωτικό πραξικόπημα στη Χιλή το 1973, με επικεφαλής τον Πινοσέτ, χιλιάδες άτομα συνελήφθησαν, βασανίστηκαν και σκοτώθηκαν από τον στρατό. Άλλοι πάλι, "απλά εξαφανίστηκαν» σε μυστικές φυλακές ή ομαδικούς τάφους.
Ο Victor Jara τέθηκε υπό κράτηση στο Estadio Chile όπου βασανίστηκε και δολοφονήθηκε. Σύμφωνα με μάρτυρες, οι στρατιώτες έκοψαν τα δάχτυλά του και έσπασαν τα χέρια του.
Ο Victor Jara αποτελεί σύμβολο της αντίστασης και των επαναστατικών ιδανικών της Λατινικής Αμερικής αλλά και ολόκληρου του κόσμου. Δεν θα σε ξεχάσουμε ποτέ!
Victor Jara (23/9/1932 - 16/9/1973) had a major influence on the music and culture of Chile. For many he was the driving force of Nueva Canción, a musical movement actively involved with the revolutionary movements in Latin America. After the military coup in Chile in 1973, led by Pinochet, thousands of people were arrested, tortured and killed by the army. Others "just disappeared" into secret prisons and mass graves. Victor Jara was detained at the Estadio Chile, where he was tortured and murdered. According to witnesses, the soldiers cut off his fingers and broke his hands.
Victor Jara remains a symbol of resistance and of revolutionary ideals in Latin America and the whole world. We will never forget you!
